The party headed north on the road, and were ferried across the river by a nice man with a water elemental. Later that day, a band of six men approached from the other direction on the road. These men were apparently discharged from the Queen's service, just like the party, and were looking for work as caravan guards.
The told the story of how two men had come into town telling a tale about how they had been accosted by ogres who demanded a platinum piece at sword point. The men had fumbled out their coin purse, and in the ogres' confusion over the various kinds of coins, they had escaped with their lives.
The party agreed to hire the six armed men for a few gold apiece, and headed on towards Evansville. Late that afternoon, as the party was coming to the top of a hill, four ogres jumped out and started hurling javelins. One of the guards went down immediately, and the other took up a defensive position in front of the wagon. Cyrus blessed the party, and a ray of sunshine beamed down upon them. Roveles started shooting from his position on the wagon, and as usual, Melicertes sat on the wagon waiting for the ogres to get closer. Dolan rushed forward and gave a potion to the downed guard. The other ogres threw another volley of javelins, felling two more guards, and Dolan then rushed to pummel one of them. Cyrus cast another spell while stepping forward, and Roveles fired more arrows. After a third and final volley of javelins which missed, the real melee began. An ogre charged three guards, who were able to stab once before one of their numbers had his head crushed by a gigantic club. One ogre attacked Cyrus, breaking his shield arm. Cyrus remained upright, and conjured an obscuring mist to hide himself from the ogre while he healed himself. Melicertes finally got the idea to pick up his crossbow, and took a pot shot that missed. The last ogre had a large longsword instead of a club, and he charged towards the wagon. As he neared, he bellowed, "Give me the platinum piece!" and pointed the sword at Melicertes. The horse, already unnerved, started to get unruly.
Melicertes casually reached into his money pouch, and there was an odd sound followed by the ogre scratching his head. Roveles vaulted from the wagon and took a shot at the sword-wielding ogre, scoring a hit. Melicertes then tossed the coin onto the ground, and focused intently on the ogre. The ogre then slumped to the ground, blood pouring from his nose. At this point, Melicertes lost control of the horses, and they took off.
An ogre stumbled out of Cyrus' fog, and Melicertes concentrated on him intently for a few seconds as he passed in the out-of-control wagon. The ogre staggered, and then Cyrus came up from behind and brained it with his mace.
During this time, Dolan had received a vicious blow to the solar plexus, and wasn't looking too healthy. But he dodged to one side and delivered an awesome kick to the ogre's face. The ogre dropped to his knees, and a guard finished him off with his spear. The other ogre, having taken out a few guards, was finally brought low by a combination of arrows and spears.
Roveles chased after the wagon, neighing and whinnying with all his might. Eventually the horses stopped, and the wagon was brought back to the party. All of the guards were stabilized, and amazingly none of them died. The party decided to give each of the guards a 5 gold piece bonus, and then divided the rest of the loot amongst themselves. The only odd items carried by the ogres were a stone vial, and the ornate longsword, both of which glowed magic for Cyrus when he cast a spell.
